Volunteer Program
Our volunteer program offers a very rewarding and fulfilling experience. Our volunteers have the unique privilege of having a truly positive and meaningful impact on the lives of people at a time most needed. We offer a training session that is designed to sensitize individuals wishing to work with the terminally ill. We try to spread the knowledge of hospice care and its effects on the physical, emotional, and social needs of patients and families dealing with end of life issues.
Hospice volunteers and interns work with patients and families as part of an interdisciplinary team composed of doctors, nurses, home health aides, therapists, counselors and clergy to meet the individualized needs of patients and their families. Whereas there is indeed a medical and clinical focus to much of the care provided, patients and families have human and practical needs that volunteers are well suited to meet. The volunteer’s role is to provide respite support, emotional and spirtual support as well as bereavement support after the death, and to help with errands, housework, and transportation.
Individuals applying to become a volunteer or intern must have excellent interpersonal skills, be non-judgmental, flexible, and compassionate, as well as be comfortable working as part of our team. Our application process requires a screening interview and all applicants must completed the necessary training course. There is no fee to attend.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or intern and wish to know more about hospice services, please contact Constance J. Eye, Volunteer Coordinator at (207) 843-7521.
