Hospice Volunteer Training Session
New Hope Hospce will be holding a hospice volunteer training session beginning on June 7th to be held on Saturdays through June 28th here at New Hope Hospice in Eddington, Maine. This comprehensive 24 hour traiing session is designed to sensitize individuals wishing to work with terminally ill patients to the physical, social, spiritual and emotional needs of patients and families dealing with end of life issues. Hospice volunteers work with patients and families as part of an interdisciplinary team composed of doctors, nurses, home health aides, therapists, counselors and clergy to meet the individualized needs of the terminally ill and their families. Whereas there is a medical and clinical focus to much of the care provided, patients and families have human and practical needs that volunteers are well suited to meeting. The volunteer role is to provide respite support, emotional and spiritual support as well as bereavement support after the death, and to help with errands, housework, and transportation. Hospice volunteers must have excellent listening skills, be non-judgmental, flexible and compassionate, and be very comfortable working as part of a team. A screening interview and an application process are required to attend the volunteer training. There is no fee to attend. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or wish to know more about hospice services please contact Constance J. Eye, Volunteer Coordinator at 843-7521.
