What is Hospice?
Hospice care is based on a philosophy that emphasizes quality of life. It affirms the individual's role in making choices about care. Hospice offers options for individuals and their loved ones facing the difficulties of an incurable illness to live their lives in dignity, in the comfort of their own home.Hospice concentrates on improving the quality of life while neither hastening nor promoting death.
The Hospice focus is on treatment of symptoms (physical, emotional and spiritual) rather than curing the disease when all avenues of care have been exhausted, or the patient has chosen not to pursue further aggressive treatment. The purpose is to relieve suffering of patients and their loved ones.
Patient comfort and choice is our primary goal. Special attention is paid to effective pain management and symptom control, to enable the patient to take part in those activities they enjoy and to live each day to the fullest.
Our Philosophy
Hospice exists to provide support and care for persons in the last phases of incurable disease so that they may live as fully and comfortably as possible.
Hospice recognizes dying as a normal process whether or not resulting from disease.
Hospice exists in the hope and belief that through appropriate care and the promotion of a caring community sensitive to their needs, patients and their loved ones may be free to attain a degree of mental and spiritual preparation for death that is satisfactory to them.

Our team works very closely together and with the patient's physician to coordinate the plan of care for each individual. An RN is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to respond to patient needs. Hospice RN's visit patients regularly and as needed to ensure comfort and symptom control. Hospice Aides assist the patient and their caregivers with personal care as well as light housekeeping, errands, and meal preperation. The Hospice Chaplain visits patients in their home and is available to coordinate with the patient's own clergy to meet their spiritual needs. The Hospice Social Worker can assist people with accessing community resources, end of life planning, and emotional support for the patient and the family.
What is the Cost?
There is no cost to the patient for Hospice Care. Reimbursement for Hospice Services may come from a variety of sources: Medicare, MaineCare and private insurance. New Hope Hospice Inc. has chosen not to charge co-pays to avoid any cost to the patient. Patients are accepted for hospice care regardless of ability to pay. This includes all medications related to the hospice diagnosis, assistive devices and medical equipment needed, supplies, and alll professional services.
